Our chef

Chef Richard Ly arrived in Lamesa, Texas, at the age of five as a refugee from Vietnam and later grew up in the Greater Dallas–Fort Worth area.

His culinary journey began in earnest in 1999 when he trained under Chef Kazuaki Miyagi of Okinawa, Japan, at Kampai Sushi and Grill in Addison, Texas. This formative experience sparked a deep passion for Japanese cuisine and laid the foundation for his future in the culinary world.

In 2002, Chef Ly took a bold step forward by partnering with the owner of Kampai to open Wasabi Sushi and Grill in McKinney, Texas. The restaurant quickly gained acclaim, establishing him as a rising talent with a distinct culinary vision.

In 2013, Chef Ly moved to Oklahoma City to help launch Café Icon in Edmond, where he crafted a standout menu that continues to draw loyal patrons to this day.

His career also included a tenure as Executive Chef at P.F. Chang’s in Oklahoma City, where he led the kitchen with precision and creativity. Before founding Awaji Izakaya, Chef Ly served as Executive Chef and FOH/BOH Manager at Jimmy B’s, part of the Hal Smith Restaurant Group—further proof of his leadership and dedication to excellence in every aspect of hospitality
